What is a fault in tennis?

In tennis, a fault occurs when a player fails to make a legal serve. A fault can happen for several reasons, including hitting the net with the serve, serving the ball outside the designated area of the court, or failing to make a proper toss of the ball before serving.

When a fault is called, the server is given another opportunity to serve, known as a second serve. If the server faults again on their second serve, they will lose the point. If a player consistently faults on their serves, they may receive a warning or penalty from the umpire.

Faults are an important aspect of the game as they can significantly impact a player's performance and ultimately the outcome of a match. Players must be mindful of the rules and regulations surrounding serving to avoid faults and maximize their chances of winning points.
